ABOUT US
MISSION STATEMENT
United Academics of Maryland-University of Maryland (UAM-UMD) unites full- and part-time, tenured, tenure track, professional track, contingent, research, instructional, and library faculty to secure fair, equitable, and transparent working and learning conditions for all campus workers. We view teaching, research, and service as public goods. We know that our working conditions are students’ learning conditions. We defend academic freedom and assert that it cannot prosper without job security for all academic workers. We value the work of all faculty equally. And we believe that our university will excel only if it has a strong system of shared governance based in democracy, pluralism, and broad participation.
Based on these values, UMD AAUP-AFT seeks to create a united and powerful faculty that organizes alongside university staff, undergraduate and graduate student workers, and community members and marshals collective bargaining and collective action to secure:
- Competitive and equitable salaries that reflect the high cost of living in our region;
- Job security;
- An end to the exploitation and unequal treatment of contingent faculty;
- Full funding of higher education;
- Policies that guard against discrimination and bullying on the basis of sex, gender, gender identity, sexuality, religion, race, ethnicity, disability, immigration status, nationality, faculty rank, and employment status;
- Fair, clear, and actionable grievance policies;
- Transparency regarding the creation and implementation of university policies and procedures;
- A strong and effective system of shared governance that includes budgetary decisions;
- Constructive, democratic relationships among faculty, students, staff, and the broader communities surrounding our university.
